Profile: SVEN VÄTH
The world of EDM is a very different animal today, entering into the digital realms as with how every music genre has, and some bits of it sold off to the pop music industry. However, there is still a steady stream of music, artists, fans and events that has remained faithful to how it all started, and Sven Väth is one of the strongest vanguards.
The days of DJs slinging a few bagfuls of records to a gig is somewhat of a rare sight these days but Sven Väth, whose career in electronic music spans well over 30 years, is one of the few A-list DJs who still plays an all-vinyl set, using only the most basic of technical riders - two decks and a mixer - no matter how long those sets are. And he does not shy away from marathon sets, DJing non-stop for more than 30 hours was so much a norm in his adventures it did not even warrant an entry into any fancy books of records.
Lovingly referred to as “Papa Sven” by his fans, Sven Väth has made his mark in the music community by being one of Germany’s “pop stars” in the nineties, his single "Electrica Salsa" which is pretty much a pop song, launched his career in 1986. But things got serious after running two famous night clubs in Germany, and starting his own company Cocoon, which encompasses a club, booking agency, record label, and a branch for events, he is recognized for cultivating the underground electronic music scene not just in Germany but also in Ibiza, with his own night at Amnesia and after-parties at creative locations around the island.
Sven wasn't born a clubland royalty; he earned his way to his achievements by sheer hard work. Story was that, when he was 19 and after hearing about the mystical and mysterious music scene of Ibiza of the 70's, he hitch-hiked his way from his hometown Frankfurt to quench his curiousity about the party island - and it did not disappoint. The young-Väth did everything to keep himself on the island, to stay close to the music and parties, especially after hearing Ibiza's pioneering DJ Alfredo create that "Baleric Sound" at Amnesia back in 1980. The three months expedition turned into an annual pilgrimage for Sven, and from then, he was inspired to DJ.
Sven Väth also has a vision, a musical statement he creates as a DJ, that carried his parties, music releases and artists booking on the back of the "Cocoon" brand he created back in 1996. Here, he grew from artist to businessman, growing Cocoon into one of the most successful underground music companies today. His close involvement with the scenes between hometown Frankfurt, music capital Berlin and his summer residence Ibiza has made him one of the most recalled names for a German DJ. He was even awarded the Goethe Medal in 2015 for his contributions to the arts. Think about it - three generations of a typical German family could have danced to Sven's music, that's a living legend.
