Profile: BONOBO

Simon Green, aka Bonobo, got Amon Tobin to remix one of his earliest tracks "Scuba" so that Ninja Tune will take notice of him, and it worked. Impressed by the musical sophistication of his music, amply displayed on his debut album "Animal Magic" on another visionary UK beats and breaks label Tru Thoughts in year 2000, a fully self-instrumented and produced work that has already gotten him the attention from deep music heads worth their salt.

By this time, trip hop is a bonafide genre with pioneering acts like Massive Attack, Portishead and Tricky gaining worldwide recognition and fanbase, pathing the way for smaller, more independent acts like Bonobo to flourish as a second wave.

By 2001, with all the attention duly taken, Ninja Tune signed Green as a label artist, and released his 2nd full length album "Dial 'M' For Monkey". The might of a bigger label began to take effect with Bonobo's slow but steady invasion of the mainstream, first with the track "Flutter" being used in a TV commercial, then picked up by EA Sports to be included in the SSX On Tour snowboarding game. The 3rd album "Days To Come" is the first time Bonobo used original vocals in his music, collaborating with poet Bajka on the first single of the album "Nightlite". As much as that he's still using a lot of sampling in his compositions, he is beginning to develop a template for his brand of nu jazz, so much so even jazz aficionados began to take notice.

From there, every Bonobo record - "Black Sands" in 2010, "The North Borders" in 2013 and "Migration" of 2017, with the top-line support of Ninja Tune of their key artist - builds up the reputation of the solo artist into a live band project, while at the same time he can also be found behind the decks when not touring his live show, firmly planting the brand name with both live music and electronic dance music fans. You know the formula is right when Bonobo's album even start to see mainstream charts action, climbing into higher positions across Europe with every release. The "Migration" album and the track "Bambro Koyo Ganda" saw a nomination for Best Dance Recording and Best Dance/Electronica Album at the 60th Grammy Awards.
